What is Formaldehyde and why is it used in furniture?

  • Formaldehyde is a flammable, colourless and pungent gas that gives off the “new house smell” at room temperature, smells a little like sour pickle.
  • It is widely used in renovation works, including wood processing for wooden furniture manufacturing, textiles and household furnishings. It’s also a key component in the resins and glues commonly found in wooden furniture.
  • In high temperatures or hot weather, “off-gassing” can occurs, where harmful organic compounds are released from furniture products including formaldehyde.
  • Individuals exposed to these substances may experience a stinging sensation and irritation to their eyes, skin, nose, throat. Pregnant women should stay away as much as possible.
  • According to the National Cancer Institute, long-term exposure has also been associated with certain types of cancer.

  • Common options include using air purifiers with thick activated carbon filters, and ensuring proper ventilation by airing your rooms regularly.
  • You can also opt for professional services to further reduce formaldehyde levels. These experts use costly advanced techniques like photocatalytic oxidation (PCO), sealing and encapsulation.
  • However, many of these solutions are often temporary and may not completely eliminate formaldehyde from your home. While they can significantly reduce exposure, removing 100% of formaldehyde is challenging confirmed by The Straits Times.
