Laminate Kitchen Cabinets in Singapore: Price, Pros and Cons

Laminate is the most common cabinet finish in Singapore kitchens, and for good reason: it’s affordable, comes in hundreds of colours and wood grains, and wipes clean. But the laminate is only the surface. How long your cabinets last depends far more on what’s underneath it, and on what happens at the edges around the sink.

laminated kitchen cabinets are a good choice for most budgets, as long as you pick branded laminate such as EDL, Lamitek, KD panel, and other trusted brands in the market and a core that suits the wet zones. On a plywood or particle-board core, the weak point is water at the edges. Laminate-look doors on an aluminium cabinetcarcass keep the look but remove that risk, because the body underneath doesn’t absorb water.

What Laminate Kitchen Cabinets Are

A laminate cabinet is a board, usually plywood or particle board, with a thin decorative sheet bonded to its surface. The sheet carries the colour or wood grain. The board carries the weight, the hinges and the screws.

Three terms come up in every quote:

Term

What it is

What it means for you

HPL (high-pressure laminate)

Layers of resin-soaked paper pressed under high heat and pressure into a sheet, then glued onto the board

Tougher surface, better at resisting knocks, heat and scratches. The standard for kitchen doors and carcasses.

Melamine / LPL (low-pressure laminate)

Decor paper fused directly onto the board in one step

Cheaper, thinner surface. Chips more easily at edges. Often used inside cabinets or in budget quotes.

Gloss / high-gloss laminate

An HPL or acrylic sheet with a mirror-like finish

Bright, modern look. Shows fingerprints and fine scratches more than matte.

Formica is a brand of HPL, not a separate material. In Singapore, “Formica kitchen cabinets” usually just means HPL-finished cabinets. Laminate brands we use, e.g. Lamitak, EDL, Formica.

When you compare quotes, ask two things in writing: is it HPL or melamine, and what is the core board? For a closer look at the budget option, see melamine vs aluminium kitchen cabinets.

Laminate Kitchen Cabinet Price in Singapore

Laminate are usually priced per piece at 4 ft x 8 ft and carpenters will calculate the cost based on number of pieces they need to purchase for your cabinet.

Type

Typical price (S$ per foot run, top + bottom)

Melamine on particle board

Usually pre-pasted and already priced in.

Laminated plywood

About S$60 – S$500 per piece

Aluminium carcass with laminate-look doors

About S$200 – S$700; our aluminium cabinets start from S$240

Example: 4-room BTO kitchen, cabinets only

Aluminium carcass: S$5,000 – S$20,000 depending on length, tall units and hardware. Laminated plywood could be about 30-60% lesser upfront, but cost you multiples in a few years down the line.

Prices are before GST and valid as of November 2026. Countertops are quoted separately.

Three things move the price most: the core board, the number of tall units and pull-outs, and whether a gloss or textured laminate is used, overall length, countertop and backsplash selections. For how cabinet quotes are built line by line, see aluminium kitchen cabinets price in Singapore.

Laminate Colours and Finishes

Laminate’s biggest advantage is choice. Most suppliers carry hundreds of colours, so you can match the kitchen to your flooring, living room carpentry or wardrobe.

Finish

Looks like

Good to know

Solid matte

Flat colour, no shine

Hides fingerprints best. Easiest for daily cooking kitchens.

Wood grain

Oak, walnut, teak and similar

Hides small marks well. The most requested finish in our residential projects.

Textured (embossed)

Grain or stone you can feel

Looks closer to real wood. Grease can settle in the texture, so wipe it regularly and as early as possible..

High gloss

Mirror-like shine

Makes small kitchens feel brighter. Shows fingerprints and fine scratches.

Stone or concrete look

Marble, terrazzo, cement

Popular for feature panels and tall units.

A combination we’re asked for often: wood-grain bottom cabinets with a solid light colour on top, so the top cabinets don’t feel heavy in a small kitchen.

Choose colours from a physical sample under your own kitchen lighting, not from a phone screen. You can see our wood-look, matte, solid-colour and textured finishes at our Woodlands showroom. For current colour trends, see our guide to trending kitchen cabinet colours.

Pros and Cons of Laminate Kitchen Cabinets

Pros

  • Affordable: one of the lowest-cost ways to get a finished, colour-matched kitchen.
  • Huge range of looks: solid colours, wood grains, stone and gloss.
  • Easy daily cleaning: the surface is non-porous, so oil and sauce wipe off.
  • Consistent colour: unlike paint, the colour is the same across every panel.
  • HPL resists everyday wear: knocks, light scratches and heat from normal cooking.

Cons

  • Water at the edges: the laminate surface is water-resistant, but the board underneath isn’t. Once water gets past an edge or a cut-out, a wood-based core can swell.
  • Peeling near heat and steam: laminate can lift beside the oven, hob or where a rice cooker steams onto a door every day.
  • Hard to repair invisibly: a deep chip or a swollen panel usually means replacing the panel, not patching it.
  • Melamine chips easily: budget melamine edges break off under knocks.
  • Gloss shows wear: fingerprints and fine scratches are more visible.

Humidity, Swelling and Peeling in Singapore Kitchens

Singapore’s humidity alone rarely ruins laminate cabinets. Standing water does. In the old laminate kitchens we remove, the damage is almost always in the same three places.

  1.   The sink cabinet bottom panel floor, from a slow drip at the waste pipe joint or the tap.
  2.   The bottom edge of base cabinets, from mopping water and the floor trap.
  3.   Doors next to the dish rack or dishwasher, from water running down the face.

Particle board swells faster than plywood once it gets wet, and it doesn’t shrink back. Plywood holds up longer but will still swell and delaminate if water keeps getting in.

Peeling is a separate problem. It usually starts where heat or steam meets the glue line: beside built-in ovens, above the hob, or behind a rice cooker. Leave a gap and a heat shield next to built-in appliances, and don’t let steam vent straight onto a door. We cover the causes and fixes in detail in why kitchen cabinet laminate peels.

If your cabinets are already swelling: you can replace the affected panels, re-laminate the doors, or replace the whole kitchen. Re-laminating only fixes the surface; a swollen core underneath stays swollen. See kitchen cabinet replacement cost for what each option costs.

Laminate on Plywood vs Laminate-Look Doors on an Aluminium Carcass

You don’t have to choose between the look of laminate and a cabinet body that handles water. The carcass (the box) and the doors can be different materials.

Who Laminate Cabinets Suit

  • Tight budgets and rental units: laminate on plywood gives a clean finish at a lower cost.
  • Kitchens with a dry layout: where the sink is away from most cabinets, or a separate wet kitchen takes the water.
  • Homeowners who want a specific colour or wood grain to match the rest of the flat.
  • New BTO kitchens planned carefully from the start, with the sink run protected. See our guide to BTO kitchen cabinets.

Laminate on a wood core is a weaker choice for heavy wet-cooking households, kitchens where the floor is mopped daily right up to the cabinets, and older flats with known leaks at the waste pipe.

How to Make Laminate Cabinets Last Longer

  • Seal every cut-out and edge. Ask how the sink, tap and hob cut-outs are sealed. Unsealed cut-outs are where swelling starts.
  • Raise the base off the wet floor. Concrete mortar is most commonly built, or we can also build a Use adjustable legs or a waterproof plinth instead of particle board touching the floor.
  • Fix drips early. Check the sink cabinet floor every few months. A slow drip does more damage than a spill.
  • Wipe with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents, which dull the surface and attack edge glue.
  • Keep heat and steam off the doors. Move the rice cooker and kettle so steam doesn’t hit the cabinet above.

On gloss laminate, use a microfibre cloth to avoid fine swirl marks. If you’re also choosing a countertop, a waterproof top such as a stainless steel countertop with an integrated sink removes the joint where water gets into the cabinets below.

How long do laminate kitchen cabinets last in Singapore?

Laminate cabinets on a plywood or particle-board core usually last 2 to 5 years in Singapore. The first problems tend to appear around the sink, where water gets into the edges and the board swells. Laminate-look doors on an aluminium carcass last longer, because the body underneath doesn’t absorb water.

Are laminate kitchen cabinets waterproof?

The laminate surface is water-resistant, but the cabinet isn’t waterproof unless the core is. Water that gets past an edge, a cut-out or the bottom of the cabinet can swell plywood or particle board. An aluminium carcass removes that risk.

Should I choose HPL or gloss laminate?

Choose matte or wood-grain HPL if you cook daily, because it hides fingerprints and fine scratches. Gloss laminate suits small kitchens that need to feel brighter, but it shows marks more and needs gentler cleaning.

Is Formica the same as laminate?

Formica is a brand of high-pressure laminate. In Singapore, “Formica cabinets” usually means HPL-finished cabinets, whatever the brand.

How much do laminate kitchen cabinets cost in Singapore?

Laminated plywood cabinets typically cost about S$100–S$500 per foot run, and aluminium carcasses with laminate-look doors about S$200–S$700, before GST. Our aluminium cabinets start from S$240 per foot run. The core board, tall units and finish type move the price most.

Why is my laminate peeling?

Usually from heat or steam weakening the glue, such as beside an oven or under a rice cooker’s steam, or from water getting under an edge. Peeling near the sink often means the board underneath is already wet. See why kitchen cabinet laminate peels.

Can I re-laminate my old kitchen cabinets?

Yes, if the core is still sound. Re-laminating changes the surface only, so swollen or soft panels should be replaced first.
